Rishikesh is the last Himalayan city on the Ganges path, where it goes to the plain and then flows to Haridwar, located 25 km downstream.

The comparatively mild climate of Indian winter in Rishikesh (compared to the highlands of the Himalayas), located at an altitude of only 350 meters above sea level, has caused the construction of ashrams (Hindu monasteries) in Rishikesh since ancient times by those monks who for those or Other reasons preferred snowless winter and not so hot Indian summer.

Rishikesh is located in northern India in the state of Uttarakhand (renamed 5/12/2006, formerly called Uttaranchal, which was created as a separate state by separating 9/11/2000 parts of Uttar Pradesh), in the foothills of the Himalayas. The name of the city of Rishikesh ("Strands of Rishi's Hair") is formed by the monks of the monasteries in the not too distant past from the old name of the city - Hrsikes, meaning another name of Lord Vishnu - "Lord of the senses" (also "long-haired").

This holy city for adherents of Hinduism is the "world capital of yoga," which was influenced most of the two events. The first of them is connected with the mission of Saint Swami Sivananda (1887- 1963), who founded his ashram and the Society of Divine Life in Rishikesh. The second is the arrival in 1968 of the famous Beatles in the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Rishikesh ashram. And although they left India one by one, disappointed in the sincerity of their "guru", they contributed a lot to increase the popularity of Rishikesh for all spiritual seekers from the West. Rishikesh is also known as the gate of the Himalayas, is the starting point to the legendary pilgrimage mountain settlements such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
